web design: method

I have a standard approach that I use for all web sites I design:

  1. I ask you to explain what you want from the web site, in terms of:
    • purpose (what functionality do you need, what is it for)
    • style (colours you like/dislike, sites you like/dislike)
  2. I ask you to provide me with any existing letterheads, company logo's, names you use to describe your business.
  3. I draft a first (index) page for your web site (the prototype), I then ask you to:
    • review the draft and feedback on what you like and what you don't like
  4. I review your feedback and amend the prototype, we then iterate step 3, until we are both happy with the prototype.
  5. I ask you to provide text and images for the web site (unless I am also designing your graphics, in which case just the text is requested).
  6. I build the remainder of your web site, I then ask you to:
    • proof read the text and test the functionality and provide feedback to me on any final adjustments
  7. I apply any finishing touches and put the site live for you.

As you can see, the web design process is an iterative and interactive process, where both parties contribute at various stages, ensuring the web site is something that all parties will be proud of.
